Cups of white rice to grams
1 US cup of white rice = 185 g (6.5 oz). A 250 ml metric cup = 195 g.
Type 1/2, 1 1/2 or 0.75. The cup size changes the volume; the weight scales by volume, so it assumes the same filling method in every cup.
What the sources say about a cup of white rice
Two published sources, side by side. Where a source lists several forms or ways of measuring, each is a row.
| Source | What was measured | Grams per US cup | Ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our default | See “why this number” below | 185 g | 6.53 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Long-grain white, raw, 1 cup | 185 g | 6.53 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Rice (long grain, dry) (listed as 1/2 cup = 99 g) | 198 g | 6.98 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Brown rice (cooked) | 170 g | 6 oz |
Spread across sources: 7% between USDA and King Arthur for the main entry. Ingredient weights vary by brand, packing and humidity; the table is a reference, not a guarantee.
Why this number: 185 g per US cup
We use the USDA measured weight, because for liquids, fats, syrups and free-flowing grains a measured weight is more reliable than a rounded ounce value. Where the two sources disagree, both figures are in the table above and in the calculator, so you can switch to the one your recipe was written with.
This page is for uncooked rice. USDA measures 185 g for a cup of raw long-grain white rice (and the same 185 g for raw long-grain brown rice); King Arthur lists 99 g for half a cup, which is 198 g a cup, a 7% gap. Rice grains pour into a cup and settle, so the measure is much more repeatable than for flour.
A cup of cooked rice is a different quantity: USDA lists 202 g for cooked long-grain brown rice and King Arthur lists 170 g for cooked brown rice. Rice absorbs water, so a recipe that says "1 cup rice" nearly always means uncooked unless it says cooked.
A common rice-cooker "cup" is not a US cup: the measuring cup supplied with Japanese rice cookers is traditionally 180 ml (1 go), so check before using the figures here for such recipes.
