Cups of milk to grams
1 US cup of milk = 244 g (8.6 oz). A 250 ml metric cup = 258 g.
Type 1/2, 1 1/2 or 0.75. The cup size changes the volume; the weight scales by volume, so it assumes the same filling method in every cup.
What the sources say about a cup of milk
Two published sources, side by side. Where a source lists several forms or ways of measuring, each is a row.
| Source | What was measured | Grams per US cup | Ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our default | See “why this number” below | 244 g | 8.61 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Whole, 3.25% fat, 1 cup | 244 g | 8.61 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Milk (fresh) | 227 g | 8.01 oz |
Spread across sources: 7% between USDA and King Arthur for the main entry. Ingredient weights vary by brand, packing and humidity; the table is a reference, not a guarantee.
Why this number: 244 g per US cup
We use the USDA measured weight, because for liquids, fats, syrups and free-flowing grains a measured weight is more reliable than a rounded ounce value. Where the two sources disagree, both figures are in the table above and in the calculator, so you can switch to the one your recipe was written with.
Milk is slightly denser than water. USDA measures a cup of whole milk at 244 g (15 g per tablespoon), which is 3% above the 237 g of a cup of water. King Arthur gives 8 oz, which is 227 g, a rounded figure that treats milk like water.
For most cooking, 227 g, 237 g and 244 g make no difference. For custards, ganache or bread doughs where hydration matters, the heavier USDA figure is the better estimate.
In a 250 ml metric cup, whole milk is about 258 g. Skim and semi-skimmed milks are marginally different but USDA's full-fat figure is the one checked here.
