How women's clothing sizes compare
UK and Australian sizes are the same, and US sizes are usually four lower (a UK 12 is a US 8). European sizes follow the German system, which is 28 higher than UK (a UK 12 is an EU 40). French and Spanish sizes add a further 2, and Italian sizes add 6 to the German number.
These conversions work for dresses, tops, skirts, coats and trousers labelled with a single size number. Jeans labelled by waist (W28, W30) use inches instead, so find your waist size first.
Finding your size
If you are between sizes, go by your largest measurement. For fitted dresses that is usually the bust; for skirts and trousers it is the hips. Stretch fabrics are more forgiving, so you can size down in jersey and knitwear.
