UK and US measures are different
A UK (imperial) gallon is 4.546 litres; a US gallon is 3.785 litres, about 17% smaller. The same goes for pints: a UK pint is 568 ml, a US pint is 473 ml. Recipes from American websites use US cups (about 237 ml).
Water volume and weight
One litre of water weighs about 1 kg, and one cubic metre holds 1,000 litres (a tonne of water). That makes it easy to estimate the weight of a pool, tank or water butt from its volume.
