How suit sizes work
In the UK and US a jacket size is your chest measurement in inches, taken around the fullest part of the chest with arms relaxed. European and Italian brands add 10 to that figure, so a 40 chest is a 50. Many brands also add a length: S (short), R (regular) or L (long), which is about the length of the jacket, not your chest.
Suit trousers usually come with a waist 6 inches smaller than the chest (a "drop 6"), so a 40R jacket is normally paired with 34 inch trousers.
