Fitting a UK 36 jacket

UK and US suit sizes are the chest measurement in inches, so a size 36 jacket is cut for a chest of about 36 in (91 cm). To measure, wear a shirt and run a tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the armpits and across the shoulder blades, keeping it level and snug but not tight.

Each step in the chart is 2 in of chest. UK 34 is 5 cm smaller in the chest (86 cm) and UK 38 is 6 cm larger (97 cm). If your chest falls between two sizes, tailors usually suggest the larger jacket, because it is easier to take in a jacket than let it out.

Retailers label this size S, and Japanese sizing calls it S. Jackets are also sold in short, regular and long fittings, so check the length as well as the chest, and try the jacket with the sleeves and shoulders in mind, since those are the hardest parts to alter.
