Cups of walnuts to grams
1 US cup of walnuts = 113 g (4 oz). A 250 ml metric cup = 119 g.
Type 1/2, 1 1/2 or 0.75. The cup size changes the volume; the weight scales by volume, so it assumes the same filling method in every cup.
What the sources say about a cup of walnuts
Two published sources, side by side. Where a source lists several forms or ways of measuring, each is a row.
| Source | What was measured | Grams per US cup | Ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our default | See “why this number” below | 113 g | 3.99 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Chopped, 1 cup | 117 g | 4.13 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Ground, 1 cup | 80 g | 2.82 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Halves (about 50), 1 cup | 100 g | 3.53 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Pieces, 1 cup | 120 g | 4.23 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Walnuts (chopped) | 113 g | 3.99 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Walnuts (whole) (listed as 1/2 cup = 64 g) | 128 g | 4.52 oz |
Spread across sources: 4% between USDA and King Arthur for the main entry. Ingredient weights vary by brand, packing and humidity; the table is a reference, not a guarantee.
Why this number: 113 g per US cup
We use King Arthur's published figure, which is a stated reference for home bakers and is the weight most gram-based recipes from that source use. Where the two sources disagree, both figures are in the table above and in the calculator, so you can switch to the one your recipe was written with.
Walnuts are a clean example of preparation changing the cup: USDA gives 117 g chopped, 120 g for pieces, 100 g for halves and 80 g ground. King Arthur lists chopped at 113 g. The same nuts weigh up to 50% more per cup depending on how finely they have been cut.
King Arthur lists whole walnuts as 64 g for half a cup (128 g a cup), a little higher than USDA's 100 g for halves, possibly because of how the nuts are packed or what counts as whole; neither source says. If a recipe says "1 cup walnuts" without a form, assume chopped.
Toasting reduces weight slightly (moisture loss); the figures here are for raw nuts.

US cup, metric cup and spoons
One US cup of walnuts at our default weight is 113 g. A 250 ml metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and many metric recipes, holds the same volume plus 5.7%, which is 119 g. A US legal (nutrition label) cup of 240 ml is 115 g. These all assume the same packing as the US cup; read about it on US cup vs metric cup.
