Cups of vegetable oil to grams
1 US cup of vegetable oil = 218 g (7.7 oz). A 250 ml metric cup = 230 g.
Type 1/2, 1 1/2 or 0.75. The cup size changes the volume; the weight scales by volume, so it assumes the same filling method in every cup.
What the sources say about a cup of vegetable oil
Two published sources, side by side. Where a source lists several forms or ways of measuring, each is a row.
| Source | What was measured | Grams per US cup | Ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Our default | See “why this number” below | 218 g | 7.69 oz |
| USDA FoodData Central | Canola oil, 1 cup | 218 g | 7.69 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Vegetable oil | 198 g | 6.98 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Olive oil (listed as 1/4 cup = 50 g) | 200 g | 7.05 oz |
| King Arthur Baking | Coconut oil (listed as 1/2 cup = 113 g) | 226 g | 7.97 oz |
Spread across sources: 10% between USDA and King Arthur for the main entry. Ingredient weights vary by brand, packing and humidity; the table is a reference, not a guarantee.
Why this number: 218 g per US cup
We use the USDA measured weight, because for liquids, fats, syrups and free-flowing grains a measured weight is more reliable than a rounded ounce value. Where the two sources disagree, both figures are in the table above and in the calculator, so you can switch to the one your recipe was written with.
Oil is lighter than water: about 92% of its weight for the same volume. USDA measures a cup of canola oil at 218 g, 14 g per tablespoon, and its olive oil entry is 216 g per cup. King Arthur lists vegetable oil at 7 oz, which is 198 g, about 9% below the USDA figure, because it is a rounded ounce value. For a measured weight we use USDA's 218 g.
Coconut oil is listed by USDA at 218 g per cup (liquid) and by King Arthur at 113 g for half a cup (226 g a cup), both close to the other oils. Solid coconut oil packed into a cup leaves air gaps, so melt it before measuring.
Olive oil is the lightest in the USDA list at 216 g, which is why the three oils give three slightly different results from the same cup.
